Family Support

WJS Canada’s support for families emphasize building relationships to enhance the family’s strengths and achieve goals that address their needs for support in areas of struggle. These services are individualized and based on the family’s belief that their own internal resources can be strengthened and that other helpful skills can be developed. Our conviction is that the most sustainable change will occur when families are fully engaged in the process, and supported by members of their community. WJS Family Support accesses and connects to appropriate community resources that become a part of their network of support.

No two families or individuals are alike. Our programs and services are adaptable to meet the specific needs of each family that we work with. All planning with families is designed to meet their specific needs.

Services

At WJS  Canada, we work to keep the family strong by keeping them together and seeing that children have the love and care they need to grow into healthy adults and we do this through 12 Family Service Centres across Central and Northern Alberta. We encourage and support family decisions in building connections with community and school resources. Our Signs of Safety planning and holistic case management approach engages and empowers families and enables them to address the emotional, social, physical and general health aspects of their lives. We create a support network including family, friends, organizations and members within the community along with other professionals. We develop goals and monitor results. When children and youth cannot live safely with their own families, we provide for their growth and successful upbringing in another family environment.

Programs

When children must be removed from their home to ensure their well being, the first goal is to reunite them with their families as soon as possible. At the same time, regular visits, counseling to make sense of the separation and loss and plans to reunite, help the children, youth and parents through this separation.

Family Preservation Services are short-term services designed to assist families in crisis. They focus on improving parenting and making families functional so that children do not have to be removed from the home. Family preservation services grew out of the realization that while children need a safe and stable environment, separating them from their families is traumatic and often has lasting negative effects. These services build on the conviction that many children can be safely protected and treated within their own homes when parents are provided with services and support that empower them to change their lives.

WJS Canada’s Supervised Visits and Supported Access programs support children in care to maintain relationships with significant people in their lives. Visitations promote and facilitate the access of non-residential parents, grandparents, siblings and extended family or other significant persons. They help the children retain healthy, stable relationships with both parents, regardless of the parents’ relationship with each. This service ensures children are safe while the right of access is preserved and helps both children and parents to overcome deep seated anxiety created by their separation. Through these Supervised Visits and Supported Access programs positive relationships are nurtured at a time when family members need one another the most.

WJS home visitation programs are offered to parents as a support in raising children to be healthy, safe and secure. Home visitors meet with families in the parent’s home to enhance parenting knowledge and skills, to provide support and listen to issues affecting their family. We provide information on child development and child health as well as activities that promote parent/child bonding and attachment. Home visitation provides an opportunity to work in the family environment, to learn first hand about the conditions of life for the parent and child and to tailor services to best meet their needs. Home visitation reaches isolated families that are unable to participate in other services.
