I was presented with the opportunity to take on the role of full time Home Share Provider for two lovely women. It was a great experience for 14 years until I retired.

Being able to guide them through some of their adult years was very rewarding for me, because each day could bring small, but important accomplishments for them. When they were able to complete a task such as brushing teeth or hair and get positive feedback and high fives, it always made them smile.

The personal connection and time together each day, whether working on a recipe, going to the store or bank, doing laundry, choosing clothes to wear, going to the pool, playing in the snow, planning for Christmas, Halloween, etc; it was always rewarding, even if it didn't go smoothly every time. Some days nothing went as planned, but that was okay.

It really allowed me to realize all the small things in your own life are really special every day. A humbling experience that filled me with gratitude and still does. I was the lucky one who was taught by the two ladies about what is really important in life.

Jojo began her journey with WJS Canada as a Home Share provider in 2007. Jojo welcomed aging adults into her house, giving them a home, dignity and a chance to feel a part of a family unit.

Every morning when she wakes up, Jojo is reminded of the impact the ladies she provides care for has on her and her family. Home share has changed her life forever, she says.

Jojo not only finds support in her work through WJS, but also within the community of other Home Sharing providers.

Jojo has developed friendships with other caregivers in the WJS family to help cope with tough days, compare strategies and foster a sense of connection. Doing this job Jojo says is hard but, at the end of the day, you feel amazing that you’re making a difference.
